Questions & Answers

Q. Are you a self-taught artist?

A. I always enjoyed the opportunity to take art classes throughout high school and undergraduate studies, although my focus was always on the sciences.  Interestingly, I feel the science background enhances my art, as I often mix in substances to optimize paint flow and leveling.

Q. What types of paints do you use?

A.  Mostly acrylic latex.  I prefer non-toxic, permanent, flexible materials whenever possible.

Q. Do you apply any finish to the surface?

A.  Depending on the desired appearance, I may apply a supplemental layer such as resin (BPA-free, no-VOC).  This allows the piece to take on a shiny reflection, and complements some varieties of work, such as a beach, sand, sea palette or theme.  For most of my creations, I prefer the artistic simplicity of paint on quality canvas.

Q. What is the most difficult part of your process?

A.  The waiting.  Depending on the process, the surface may continue to evolve for another day after the painting is complete.  Different colors move to the foreground, and cells begin to take on character of their own.  It is always exciting to see the final composition.
